Restore Your Youthful Volume

As we age, our bodies begin to reduce the production of the essential substances, such as collagen and hyaluronic acid that keep our skin resilient and supple. Fine lines gradually set in, the skin develops new creases and we begin to see the obvious effects of time. However, one of the most noticeable and transformative consequences of aging is the loss of facial volume. In the cheek area, for example, age-related volume loss is due in part to the absorption of fat and bone, which together provide the skin with its necessary scaffolding. When the volume is diminished, the skin begins to sag and droop. In order to counteract falling skin, structure and volume must be restored.

Volume Restoration Options in New York

An injectable dermal filler is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that can give the face an instant pick up. Restylane, Radiesse, and Juvederm are three of the most well known products that can temporarily plump, smooth and rejuvenate the face. Most dermal fillers nowadays contain the local anesthetic lidocaine which makes the injection more comfortable. Most, but not all facial fillers use Hyaluronic acid, a gel that mimics a substance naturally found in skin. Hyaluronic acid attracts water, so the amount or concentration is important in determining their use. Other aspects that add to the choice of product for an individual patient or area are crosslinking and rigidity.  Dr. Westreich works with many different dermal fillers in his New York office:

Restylane-L

It can be used effectively in many areas of the face such as cheeks, chin, jawlines, lower eyelids, lips, and in the nose. The active agent in Restylane is hyaluronic acid, a hydrating sugar compound that the body produces naturally. When injected, Restylane can instantaneously smooth out deep creases and enhance volume in selected areas. Injectable hyaluronic acid is a safe, biocompatible compound that gets degraded gradually by the body over time. Results are immediate and may last 9-12 months. Restylane is intended for use on mid-to-deep dermal implantation, correcting moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Restylane is also for lip augmentation in patients over the age of 21.

Juvederm

Like Restylane, Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler that provides volume and fullness. It has a nigher concentration of hyaluronic acid than restylane (24U versus 20U) so it is a good choice to enhance the lips for a fuller, poutier appearance. It can also be used in the cheeks, jawline, and chin. Juvederm products are a smooth consistency gel, compared to some hyaluronic gel products that have a granular consistency. Ultimately, Juvederm is great for volumizing the skin by way of correcting deeper folds and wrinkles.

Voluma

Voluma is a product very similar to Juvederm but provides longer-lasting corrections between 18-24 months and has greater lifting capabilities. Since it has a high stiffness quotient, Voluma is best used for midface volumizing, as it provides a lift to the overlying tissues of the midface. Voluma should not be used superficially in the dermis or lips. Most patients who use Voluma also use another softer dermal filler, such as Restylane Kysse, Vollure, or Volbella, for comprehensive treatment.

Radiesse

Radiesse is a volumizing injectable compound that is made up of synthetically produced smooth calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a sodium carboxymethylcellulose gel carrier. After a few months, the gel carrier begins to dissolve, stimulating the production of your body’s own collagen, which keeps the volume restoration stable. Over time, the CaHa microspheres are also absorbed naturally by the body. Radiesse is different from other filler products and should only be used for augmentation of the midface and for smoothing out nasolabial (nose to lip) and marionette (lip to chin) lines. Other uses of Radiesse are possible but need to be discussed specifically at the time of your treatment with Dr. Westreich. Volume restoration is similar to other products, typically lasting 9-12 months.

Belotero

Belotero is a facial filler designed to target the under eye region and nasolabial folds, also known as smile lines—the lines that extend from either nostril to the corners of the mouth. Like other facial fillers, Belotero displays almost instant results with no downtime, allowing patients to emerge from their treatment with visible improvement in their smile lines.

Vollure

Vollure is a smooth injectable hyaluronic acid filler that is extremely versatile and can be used superficially in most facial areas. It has a hyaluronic acid concentration that is higher than Volbella, but lower than Restylane.

Restylane Expression Fillers

Recently, Galderma produced a line of filler products with the unique ability to stretch with the skin after injection. The purpose for use in areas of the face with a significant amount of movement. The products with expression technology, consisting of Defyne, Refyne, Contour, and Kysse can be used all over the face, but are particularly effective in the areas around the mouth, such as nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and lips. They can, however, be used in any facial location and perform similar to Restylane.

Volbella

Juvederm Volbella is a hyaluronic acid-based filler that is softer than other Juvederm products and also has a lower hyaluronic acid concentration.. Under the care of a skilled injector, Volbella can be used to subtly add volume and contour to the lips, while also smoothing vertical smoker’s lines. Further, the texture of Volbella allows it to mimic the natural feel of your lips, giving you the confidence you deserve. Volbella also is used for fine etched lines, as a layered approach with other fillers.

Expertly Vetted Options for Enhanced Aesthetics

Additional fillers exist currently, such as RHA, Sculptra, Skin Vive, and others. New filler products are introduced frequently. With every new introduction, Dr. Westreich evaluates their effectiveness, cost basis, and quality before incorporating them into the practice. Be confident that if Dr. Westreich’s practice offers it, it has been thoroughly vetted.

Volume Restoration What to Expect

Although widely used, injectable volume restoration treatments require both an eye for detail and a skillful hand. If done improperly, the face may look artificially swollen or exaggerated. Dr. Westreich makes it his priority to achieve natural-looking results. He understands the benefits and limitations of the different dermal fillers. Before injecting a dermal filler, Dr. Westreich considers the overall condition of a patient’s skin, the location, cost, and effectiveness and determines which product is most suitable. A volume restoration is a straight-forward procedure. During the session, Dr. Westreich will inject a small amount of filler with a needle or a cannula.

A painless process, a single volume restoration treatment can be done during a lunch hour appointment. Because no incisions are made, no downtime is required. After treatment, patients can expect to experience some redness, swelling, and tenderness around the treated area. However, the irritation typically subsides within a day or two. Although not permanent, Restylane, Radiesse, and Juvederm all can provide long-lasting results. If administered properly, these fillers can last up to a year.
